From the DA Chief Executive, Phillip Stone
This time may be different – only time will tell -
This stands to reason, I suppose, but the evidence over the last 20 years or so suggests that the logistics industry in general and the courier sector specifically have withstood the slings and arrows of large-scale monetary policy (or lack thereof) much more robustly than have other industries.
This time may be different – only time will tell – but our banana skins have been more self-inflicted than having rained down from the heavens. A neglect of marketing, poor investment in training and staff retention, lack of planning and general low standards in business acumen have caused couriers over the years to fall prey to threats like the incursion of electronic messaging in the 90’s, the resource-sapping of inflation in the 80’s and the general rapid development of technology before that time and since then.
Everybody seems to have, if not an answer, then at least a view as to what lies in store for us in today’s recession. Again, some soothsayers will prove to be visionary while others will turn out as crackpots, and the line between the two may not be wide. However, consider these words of Franklin D. Roosevelt describing the challenge he faced when becoming president of the United States in 1932. Roosevelt’s first hundred days in office were remarkable for the stream of legislation which formed the basis of his plan to break out of the great depression with what we now know as ‘The New Deal’. He said “practices of the unscrupulous money changers stand indicted in the court of public opinion, rejected by the hearts and minds of men”. Never mind the (so-called) experts – let’s do what we do well and we will be giving ourselves the best possible chance to survive and thrive.
